Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information Chess-Clock.com ("we", "us", "the site") collects when you use it, how it's used, and the choices you have. By using the site you agree to this policy.

The short version

Chess-Clock.com is a free tool and information site. You don't need an account, and we don't ask you for personal details. The clock runs entirely in your browser. The main data collection comes from third parties we use — advertising and, if enabled, analytics — described below.

Information we collect

  • Information you give us: only if you contact us directly (for example by email), in which case we receive whatever you choose to send.
  • Automatic technical data: like most websites, our hosting provider and third-party services may log standard information such as your IP address, browser type, device, referring page and the pages you view, for security and to make the site work.
  • On-device settings: any clock preferences (such as a chosen theme or default time control) are stored locally in your own browser and are not sent to us.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small files stored by your browser. We use them in two ways:

  • Essential / preference storage to remember settings on your device.
  • Third-party cookies set by advertising and analytics providers (below).

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though some features may then behave differently.

Advertising

We may display ads served by Google, using Google AdSense. In connection with this:

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this site and other sites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits here and elsewhere on the internet.
  • You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
  • You can opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info/choices.
  • More on how Google uses data when you use our site is available in Google's advertising policies.

If you are in the UK, EU or another region requiring consent, you will be asked for your advertising preferences via a consent banner before personalised ads are shown.

Analytics

We may use a privacy-respecting analytics service to understand, in aggregate, how the site is used (for example which pages are popular). Where this involves cookies or personal data, it is covered by the cookie and consent sections above. [Update this section to name the analytics tool you actually use, e.g. Google Analytics or a cookieless alternative.]

Fonts and hosting

The site loads web fonts from Google Fonts, which means your browser contacts Google's servers and Google may receive your IP address. The site is served through our hosting and content-delivery provider, which processes technical request data to deliver pages securely.

Links to other sites

Our pages may link to external sites (such as chess organisations or references). We aren't responsible for the privacy practices of those sites; please review their policies.

Children's privacy

This site is general-audience and not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent age in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Advertising shown is intended to be non-personalised for users we believe to be children where required by law.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal data:

  • UK / EU (GDPR): rights to access, correct, delete or restrict use of your data, to object to processing, and to data portability. The legal bases we rely on are your consent (for advertising/analytics cookies) and our legitimate interests (in operating and securing the site).
  • California (CCPA/CPRA): rights to know what personal information is collected and to opt out of its "sale" or "sharing" for cross-context behavioural advertising. You can exercise the advertising opt-outs linked above.

To make a request, contact us at the address below.

Data retention

We keep any information you send us only as long as needed to respond. Technical logs and third-party advertising/analytics data are retained according to those providers' policies.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the "last updated" date above.
